I'm trying to use the Paint modifier to create a "terrain" mesh. I looked at the example video available here (http://www.west-racing.com/mf/?page_id=1292), but the modifier does not function as demonstrated. For starters the rollout for the modifier options does not at all conform to the example video. This wouldn't be so much of a problem, but there isn't an explanation of what most of the options do.

Further, when the video describes drawing on new elevations it uses the phrase "just click and drag" which does not work. When I click and drag on a selected object the selector lasso is displayed (allowing for selection or deselection of objects). At no point have I been able to reproduce the results from the demo video to any extent. Is there some modifier key I need to press while clicking and dragging? Am I missing something so obvious that I'm just looking past it without realizing?

To be clear I have created a fresh project (with unity 4.1.2) with only megafiers / megashapes installed. I tried using a regular plane mesh and a megashape page mesh with no results. What kind of meshes are supported? Do I need to use a regular terrain mesh? What am I doing 'wrong'?

As a side note, I've always found mega-fiers / mega shapes very frustrating to use. Some modifiers "just work" as expected while with others I feel like I'm trying to model with boxing gloves on and I don't really understand why. Most of the modifiers are pretty easy concepts to understand and I've used modifiers in other 3d software (like 3dsmax) with success.

But to answer some of the questions, the video was made during development of the modifier and the custom inspector was not in place then, the modifier now has a custom inspector to keep it consistent with the other modifiers, so t includes the common modifier params before the Paint params, but you can close those off and you are left with exactly the same params as in the video but in a better laid out way.

All modifiers work by changing the vertices that exist on a mesh, it does not add or remove any vertices so using a paint modifier on the standard unity plane mesh is not going to be much use as there are not enough vertices to make it worth while. Also it does not work on terrain meshes, if you have a terrain mesh then probably best to use the terrain tools for creating your mesh.

As for the side note if you submit a support ticket saying which modifiers you find confusing or do not work as expected then I can help guide you through them and at the same time update any docs or videos to make them less 'confusing'.
