I am a user of Modo 601, as I cannot afford 3DS Max, but morph target functionality is something that I have been looking for to use with Unity. Megafiers became instantly alluring to me. However, doing deeper research into this site, it appears that 3DS Max and the plugin Dig-o-matic seems a requirement to use this functionality. Is this truly the case? If not, is there a brief rundown of the workflow using nonMax morph targets (such as using OBJ format files)? Thanks for your time.

Guess you found the section on the morph page and the video 🙂 Just so others know you don't need any 3d package for MegaFiers, it the morphing works with OBJ files by default but if you do have Maya, Max, Blender or Lightwave then there are exporters to make the process a little easier.
